ABSTRACT

This chapter starts with a discussion on front axles and their constructional details. The requirements of the steering system is associated with the handling characteristics of the vehicle, which refer to the vehicle’s response to steering operations, wind gust and road disturbances that affect its direction of motion. The principle of correct steering, Ackerman’s steering principle, the constructional details of the various steering arrangements, system layouts and steering gear boxes are elaborated in this chapter, including with power-assisted steering systems like electrical and electrohydraulic, their types, special features, constructional details and working with sufficient detail.
