ABSTRACT
Pneumatic tyres are the only means to transfer forces between the road and the vehicle. Tyres are required to produce the forces necessary to control the vehicle, and hence they are an important component of a vehicle. This chapter addresses the requirements of the wheel as a vehicle performance parameter optimisation, different types of tyres and wheels, their constructional details and advantages and disadvantages based on various factors. Tyre life, cornering properties and tyres characteristics are elaborated, as well as vehicle stability, road holding and safety aspects of the occupants, Tyre designation, and its material. Tyre tread patterns and re-treading procedure are also discussed with sufficient details in this chapter.
