ABSTRACT

This chapter is about the various factors associated with the fulfilment of the torque requirement of the vehicle, such as various resistances (air, rolling, gradient and associated factors), motive power required, speed range, procedure finalisation of the gears, etc. The function of the transmission system is to fulfil the traction requirements of the vehicle. The vehicle has to overcome different types of resistances during its operation, and traction requirement varies accordingly. So it is essential to regulate the torque by selecting the proper speed range. It also contains different types of manual transmission systems, principle of operation, their constructional details, working, transfer box, overdrive as well arrangements of the transaxle and heavy vehicle gear boxes.
