ABSTRACT
The demand for comfort and safety in driving is continuously increasing, which leads to the need to shift the technology from manual to automatic transmissions. An automatic transmission provides more comfort and safety and enhances the driving experience with minimum resources and maximum economy. In automatic transmission, the driver has no need to operate the clutch for longer times, which is very important as comfort is a concern in heavy traffic conditions. This chapter provides a brief discussion on the working principle of the various subsystems and components of automatic and semiautomatic transmission systems, their constructional details, and recent advances in the automatic transmission system and its control systems.
