ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a common understanding and terminology particularly for physicians and other health-care workers concerning terms that are central to the modern understanding of physical activity and health. The benefits of physical activity will also be put in the context of how other aspects of daily habits and actions impact on health. An academic field titled “Lifestyle Medicine” has evolved to help physicians and other health-care workers understand and employ this important body of information. The capacity to perform physical activity as well as preferences and needs vary considerably across the lifespan. The benefits of increased physical activity are huge and span every stage of life. These benefits contribute to improved health and lower the risk of various chronic diseases as well as serving as an adjunct to other components of treatment. Lifestyle factors including physical activity also play a very important role in brain health.
