ABSTRACT

Physical Activity can play an important role for individuals who have chronic conditions. It can assist in the therapy of a chronic condition such as in formal rehabilitation programs. This chapter provides a summary of the most common chronic conditions in adults in the United States and outlines the multiple important roles that increased physical activity can play in ameliorating or treating them. According to the US National Cancer Institute, a person is considered to be a cancer survivor from the time of diagnosis until the end of life. Physical activity has been shown to yield multiple health benefits for individuals with a variety of chronic conditions including cancer survivors, individuals with osteoarthritis, individuals with hypertension, individuals with Type 2 Diabetes, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and intellectual disabilities. There are multiple health related benefits for increased physical activity in individuals who have high blood pressure. These benefits include lowering blood pressure.
