ABSTRACT

The ecosystem services concept was developed in the framework of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, which provided technical information and evaluated the significance of ecosystem change on human well-being. Addressing transboundary water governance entails a thorough understanding of the reasons of water challenges in the context of rationalized knowledge about the vital role of biodiversity and the ecosystem services of water. All kinds of water contribute to regulating services, in particular rainbow water, blue surface water, blue groundwater, green water and white ice. Rainbow, surface and groundwater have positive influences on cultural services and enhancing human well-being. Grey and black water have limited influence on educational services; however, a thorough knowledge about their influence can contribute to human well-being. The literature on freshwater resources states that demand for freshwater is surpassing its supply in various parts of the world.
