ABSTRACT

The digital forensic process involves discovering information in an attempt to provide insight into actions and events. The details that explain what has occurred are often lacking, and in some situations almost nothing is known about what has happened. Files have several date and time (temporal) attributes including created time, modified time, and accessed time. Link and visual analysis (LAVA) tools take information and develop intelligence by finding links and correlations within the data. A potential pattern emerges within the organizational diagram where there is a clear path linking the four individuals together. Social networks from digital sources such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn leave traces of activity on computers and mobile devices. Eigenvector Centrality measures the amount of influence that a node has in a network. LAVA has application in many fields including law enforcement, intelligence, finance, insurance, health care, and a variety of other areas where studying linkages and relationships helps provide situational insight.
