ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the model-based scattering power decomposition method in detail. Scattering power decompositions have been a hot topic in radar polarimetry for more than two decades. There exist nine real independent polarimetric parameters in the 3 × 3 coherency or covariance matrices. Physical model-based scattering power decomposition tries to account for these polarimetric parameters as much as possible in the decomposition. Based on the scattering models, the measured coherency matrix by ensemble average in an imaging window is expanded by submatrices (scattering models). Finally, the scattering powers are determined by the expansion coefficients.
