ABSTRACT

How does your company typically react after a workplace injury? The ways in which an organization responds after an incident can have a dramatic impact on trust and psychological safety. In Chapter 9, the author provides case studies to illustrate how defensiveness and blame after a significant incident are all too common in less mature safety cultures. In such a retributive climate, blaming a worker after an incident leads to reduced trust and a subsequent reduction in people’s willingness to speak up. Conversely, a Restorative Just Culture approach helps leaders to respond ethically and to demonstrate care to those affected by an incident, protecting the psychological safety of the team. The reader is provided with a useful checklist to help ensure this is done in the future.
