ABSTRACT

One of the most powerful influencing tools leaders have at their disposal is the effective use of questions. The brain is hard-wired to answer questions; hence, leaders can use targeted questions to steer attention and tap into the collective wisdom of their teams. In Chapter 7, the author provides the reader with examples of effective (as well as potentially damaging) questions. The consistent use of assumptive, internally-focused questions can assist leaders in creating a solution-focus as well as a greater sense of control, engagement, and empowerment within the workforce. The author also stresses the need for leaders to ask questions that promote a healthy sense of unease to prevent complacency and build collective mindfulness within their teams when engaging in risk management activities.
