ABSTRACT

This chapter on position reference sensors, or position measuring equipment as they are also known, deals with the basic working principles of various position reference sensors. A DP vessel may deploy a number of position reference sensors based on the class of DP and type of job she is engaged in.

This chapter covers all possible aspects of position reference sensors in an easy to understand language for all levels of reader. From GPS/DGPS which is commonly used on all types of vessel, an attempt has been made to cover all other vessel specific position reference like Artemis and differential absolute relative positioning system (DARPS). The PRS, based on sound propagation in water, known as hydro acoustic position reference (HPR and HiPAP) and the new generation of radars, commonly known as frequency modulated continuous wave radars (FMCW), are also covered.
