ABSTRACT
In this chapter on power management systems used in DP enabled vessels, the interaction of the power management system with the DP system is explained. This easy to understand concept is explained in simple words. It is the power (electrical) which makes everything work. So, it is of paramount importance that the required level of power is always maintained. The concept of variable frequency drives and the signals associated with them, is discussed.
Also discussed are the main functions of power management systems. The concepts of load sharing, symmetric or asymmetric, power limits and various levels of hardware used, are also discussed. The last part of the chapter deals with the uninterruptible power supply, which is must as per IMO guidelines, to supply power when the primary source may fail.
