ABSTRACT

Many applications within a motor vehicle require the “switch” function in order to connect a load to the power distribution system. A multitude of products have been designed to meet this goal. Among these, the intelligent switch and the solid-state relay are the most significant. Any transfer of control information to the actuator needs be done with a relay. The actuator in motor vehicle applications is usually a small electric motor or a solenoid. Due to the wide use of electromagnetic relays, standardization is considered for packaging in order to allow inter-changeability. Solid-state relays offer numerous advantages and it seems to be the solution in the long term. Solid-state relays can be unidirectional or bidirectional. As a variant for fuses, the fusible links are different in design and identical in purpose and functionality. Automobile fuses are available in three types: glass cartridge type, ceramic type, and blade type. Circuit breakers are used in place of fuses in certain heavy vehicles.
