ABSTRACT

The simplest possible motor can be considered as starting from a magnetic needle, similar to the one used for a compass. Since both the brushless dc motor and the induction motor use a similar power electronic converter for control, it is worthwhile making a direct comparison between the two. Most electric and hybrid vehicles use brushless dc motors. The use of an electric motor drive for pumps or fans constitutes a special category in terms of both the construction and use of the electric motor. Multiple motor drives are supplied from the same dc voltage bus, and their individual transients bring large current variations into the dc bus. The automotive market has overwhelmingly encouraged research on other technologies for motor drives. Among these an attractive yet not fully explored alternative is offered with ultrasonic motors. Electrical motors are the most important component in automotive mechatronics, and their application is growing with the advent of convenience and safety systems.
