ABSTRACT

This chapter gives a brief introduction about the importance of low RCS phased arrays in stealth technology. It describes how the conventional low profile patch arrays are contributing toward RCS by supporting surface waves and the need of HIS layer to suppress these surface waves. The objective is to control of both structural RCS and radiation mode RCS of patch array with the usage of HIS elements in the ground plane. Various configurations of HIS have been presented describing the ways to implement a high impedance surface in an antenna/array system as a separate layer or integrate it with the ground plane itself. A generic analytical formulation for the estimation of radiation mode RCS of phased array is also described.
