ABSTRACT

The present chapter describes the pollution of soil due to heavy metals through the implementation of Hakanson risk evaluation combined with the ArcGIS technology. The analysis in this chapter was performed based on the type and amount of heavy metals contaminating the soil. The soil samples were collected from a mining area and were analyzed for heavy metals such as zinc, mercury, arsenic, copper and lead. The analysis showed that there was prevalent contamination of the five heavy metals as mentioned already using the Nemero pollution index and the single factor index. As a result of the study, extensive ecological risks at around 83% have been observed, along with very high levels of mercury, arsenic and lead. The analysis in this chapter was carried out using the Single factor index.
