ABSTRACT

The construction industry is an integral part of a country’s infrastructure and economic development and an essential contributor to the development of an economy. Chapter 2 covers the critical role of the construction industry in economic development; its characteristics, structure, nature of investment and opportunities in India; the present state of the construction industry; the growth of firms in the construction industry; and the constraints and factors influencing construction productivity. The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy has collected data on the growth of firms in the Indian construction industry from 2013–14 to 2018–19. In order to rank the fastest growing firms in the Indian construction industry, the study developed a ‘growth index statement’ with a weighted index of growth of revenue and of profit with profit as the weight. One of the major findings of the study is that the turnover leaders were not the growth leaders.
