ABSTRACT

Population explosion, urbanization, and consumer demand have increased the waste generated, and it is becoming a global issue. Solid waste generation in developing countries has led to 25% of the diseases due to insufficient management techniques, and it was reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) that it may lead to further pollution to the environment and disease spreading. This chapter attempts to give idea about solid waste management (SWM) starting from the various waste quantities from different sources. Management of solid waste includes the handling of wastes from production to the final dumping stage. Modern times require not only waste dumping, but also the reduction of the volume due to the increase in waste quantity. So there is a need for various technologies for waste reduction and also recycling of the products. The solid waste generated poses health hazards and environmental pollution to the global community and it requires safe handling with less pollution to the environment. The waste treatment has come to include the generation of the energy and also effective utilization of the potential waste sources. This chapter gives information about the various processes and considerations, including future policies for effective waste management.
