ABSTRACT

This chapter specifies the detailed study of lignocellulosic biomass conversion into second- and third-generation biofuels. The different sources from which the biofuel was extracted are discussed at the beginning of the chapter. This chapter contains comparative studies of energy security and greenhouse gas emission from biofuels. Also, it includes a brief on global bioenergy contribution. This chapter focuses on the conversion technology of biomass gasification, which consists of the chemistry of gasification, the gasification medium, the range of equivalence ratio, and temperature. One of unique higher alcohols is biobutanol, and its production technology is also discussed in his chapter. Due to high demand for energy, new technologies for producing biofuels are considered in this chapter. Apart from different techniques, the chapter focuses on the application of biofuel in the fuel cell. The impact of biofuel on society and the environment is also discussed along with their ethical issues.
