ABSTRACT

Understanding general fish reproduction is key to better evaluating social and biological conditions within a given system. This chapter provides basic insights into reproduction of some commonly kept fish species. Knowledge of changes that may occur in species during sexual maturity, including sexual differences in shape and coloration, provides important social and biological contexts, especially increased territoriality and/or aggression. In addition, some basic hatch and fry rearing information is provided. Finally, egg binding (dystocia) identification and management is discussed.
