ABSTRACT
For the first 92 elements in the Periodic Table there are three classifications which can be used: metals, non metals and inert gases. But from all of these over 300 000 different materials can be produced. These materials can be classified into four broad categories: metals, polymers, ceramics and glasses, and composites. In terms of the engineering materials they can be considered as in Figure 1.1.
