ABSTRACT

Table I.1 gives data on the growth of bones from seven-day-old chick embryos after cultivation over a nutrient chemical medium (Biggers and Heyner, 1961). The observations are of log dry weight (μg). Two bones were available from each embryo and the experiment was therefore set out in a (balanced) incomplete block design with two units per block. C denotes the complete medium with about 30 ingredients in carefully controlled quantities. The five other media were obtained by omitting a single amino-acid, e.g., His- is a medium without L-histidine, etc. The treatment pairs were randomized, but the results are given in systematic order. Interest lies in comparing the effects of omitting the various amino-acids.
