ABSTRACT

Table L.1 (Ries and Smith, 1963) compares two detergents, a new product X and a standard product M. Each individual expresses a preference between X and M. In the table, Yj is the number of individuals out of nj in ‘cell’ j who prefer X, the remaining nj – Yj preferring M. The individuals are classified by three factors, water softness at three levels, temperature at two levels, and a factor whose two levels correspond to previous experience and no previous experience with M. The object is to study how preferences for X vary.
