ABSTRACT
Foundations transmit the total load from a building on to the ground by direct contact pressure. The foundation must distribute the building loads in such a way that it ensures that the bearing stratum is not overstressed and that total settlements are within acceptable limits. The foundation designer therefore needs to have some knowledge of the type of strata present below the foundations.
