ABSTRACT
Since the UK droughts in 1947 and 1976, research work by the Building Research Establishment, National House Building Council and other organizations has resulted in a better understanding of the effects of trees on soils that are classed as shrinkable clays. On housing developments, existing trees and new planting improve the amenity of the urban landscape visually, and provide wind and sound breaks between areas.
