ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines some of the developments in healthy eating and physical activity, and provides suggestions for managers to encourage, motivate and stimulate their workforce. The new concept of healthy eating arose, and was interpreted in Britain as an emphasis on the prevention of chronic disease, especially coronary heart disease. In the workplace, researchers have found that caterers see healthy eating as anything ranging from a fat-free diet, the avoidance of chips, to involving only the use of fresh produce. Healthy eating practices and policies continue to develop although the information provision can be inconsistent and ineffective. In Northern Ireland, the Healthy Eating Circle Award aims to encourage customers to change to healthier lifestyles by offering a wide variety of appropriate eating choices, optimal standards of hygiene and non-smoking areas.
