ABSTRACT

From our discussions in previous chapters, we see that it is extremely difficult to find exact solutions for compressible flow problems. In practice, we must use the approximate methods previously discussed. Linearization by the method of small perturbations has been extensively used because of the frequent interest in the flow around thin bodies. However, as mentioned in Chapter VI, this method of linearization fails for both the transonic and the hypersonic regions. In this chapter we shall discuss the fundamental equations of transonic ( § 2) and hypersonic ( § 17) flows for thin bodies with the help of the theory of small perturbations. These equations are nonlinear.
