ABSTRACT

The analysis of work processes and tasks is a primary activity in Scenario-based Engineering Process (SEP) domain analysis. Through the techniques analysts are able to investigate tasks the system will support, define information and data needs, determine the level of intelligent support required, and plan the functionality of the components. This chapter defines and describes work process and task analysis within the context of SEP domain analysis. It presents background information on work process analysis, including some of its variations, followed by guidelines for conducting a work process analysis. The chapter explores how task analysis can be used for system development, including basic definitions and requirements. It presents guidelines for conducting major types of task analysis, provides examples of task analysis output, and identifies advantages and disadvantages of the techniques. If the system to be developed is to eliminate performance problems, reduce training time, or enable the hiring of less qualified personnel, a cognitive task analysis may be required.
