ABSTRACT

Interactive observation entails actual observation of work flow and its artifacts. This is followed by brief questioning segments in which the analyst tries to understand better what is happening, how the performer is approaching the work, and what problems may be present. This chapter describes the purpose and goals of interactive observation within Scenario-based Engineering Process and provides background on why and how it should be used for systems development. It structures the process, detailing how to get started and what to expect at each step. The chapter also describes how to develop a sampling schedule, if it is needed, and how to develop observation templates that assist in recording and analyzing session information. It discusses the structure of a typical interactive observation session and illustrates the types and levels of questioning that are appropriate. The chapter presents samples of output from interactive observation sessions and highlights the advantages and disadvantages of the technique.
