ABSTRACT

This chapter defines the structured interview and differentiates it from unstructured sessions. It then provides some guidelines on how to use the structured interview effectively throughout the Scenario-based Engineering Process approach, including how to prepare for, conduct, and close the interview. The chapter addresses verbal and nonverbal communication, feedback, questioning and listening skills, and note taking. It provides tips for managing common problem situations. The purpose of the structured interview is to gather a wide range of information in the early phases of a project. Later, it can be used to gather specific details or to verify and validate information already gathered. It can be used at any point in the requirements gathering process or during design feedback sessions. The main advantage of the interview is that it is familiar to most people. Everyone has had a job interview or has solicited information from someone in formats similar to the interview. Thus, it may be more comfortable for the interviewee.
