ABSTRACT

1.1 HISTORY

Direct current (dc) polarography, the original and still a very commonly used form of polarography, was discovered by Jaroslav Heyrovský more than 50 years ago. During the last three decades a most impressive variety of new polarographic methodology has come into existence. Most of these new techniques are associated with certain theoretical advantages, which, if realizable in practical applications, should have made the original dc form virtually obsolete by now. However, this has not eventuated, and it is only recently that many of the new methods are beginning to gain real practical acceptance as methods of trace analysis.
