ABSTRACT

This chapter covers basic hardware found in a teleprocessing system. The two major devices are the processors and the interface to the telecommunications network. In order to understand what processors do and how they do it, we'll take a look at basic building blocks from which a processor is made and describe the functions of each. Augusta formulated instructions for the analytical engine and for this reason is considered the first computer programmer. There are two types of controlled line servicing: addressing, or calling, and polling. Frequency division multiplexing is accomplished by dividing a band of frequencies into several smaller band widths and applying or placing each of several signals into a different band segment. The chapter introduces the hardware encountered most frequently in data communications, beginning with computers or processors, continuing through modems, converters, multiplexers, and ending with facsimile machines.
