ABSTRACT

Networking is introduced at this point to give the reader perspective on the historical development of unusual networks, protocols, and standards. In order to provide increased access to the major computer located on one of the islands from terminals located on all of the other islands, an over-the-air radio network was created. Since the ALOHA network had been so successful other innovative networking techniques began to develop. Topology of networks means the physical arrangement and the number of interconnects between different nodes on the network. Star topology is exemplified by the present telephone network where each subscriber is a node and is connected to any other subscriber through a central office switch-bank which could be a single point of failure. Modems would implement protocols in the first three layers-network, data link, and physical-while a mainframe processor would implement protocols in all seven layers. The machines networked together operate a number of protocols to insure the orderly exchange of information.
