ABSTRACT

Space data is often kept on file by physical entity--site, tract, building, floor, room. Data collection for laboratories, hospitals, schools, and the like is usually done with a blend of the forms shown for industrial and administrative facilities. Virtually every facilities planning project is subject to certain constraints such as a budget, or a zoning restriction; or to certain environmental influences such as topography, or soil strength, or prevailing winds; or even to the attitudes of key personnel who will use or work in the facility. Making a list of these constraints, special considerations, and influences of all kinds is an important step toward good facilities plans. Administrative and institutional facilities are planned primarily around communications patterns. A common starting point is the communications survey. In its extreme form, an open-ended questionnaire is given to each employee--or possibly to a large sample of employees.
