ABSTRACT

Graft polymerization is useful for introducing actively polar groups on a polymer surface. Various methods, including catalysis, oxidation, radiation, photoirradiation, and plasma polymerization have been developed for graft polymerization. To be suitable for the surface modification of polymer, such a method must take into account the following: (1) a heterogeneous reaction is apt to take place since the base polymer is a solid; (2) graft polymerization on non-polar polymer is possible; and (3) graft polymerization can take place only on the surface of stem polymer. Based on these factors, plasma treatment and photoirradiation and radiation graft polymerization are most suitable.
