ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on some key procedures essential for the craft. The relationship between software engineering and plain programming is like the relationship between walking across the room and across the desert. The mechanics of walking is the same. It is the length of the walk, the harsh environment, the risk of going the wrong way that makes the difference in both cases. During the courtship need puts its best face on and competes for the heart of the available resources against whoever else eyes that money, time, and skill. It is not uncommon for large programming shops to summon their programmers into solemn “standards” meetings, in which the team decides on a number of rules and regulations to prevent programmers from writing their own.
