ABSTRACT

Experts and practitioners in every profession are generating more and more data as they conduct research to help others do a better job in their fields. The intent is to direct our attention to the way we handle information now, with an eye toward finding a better method to present it in the future. The accepted norm for the recording injury statistics prior to introduction of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration incidence rate system was the American National Standards Institute Z16.1 standard. This chapter concentrates on the traditional ways a safety professional goes about certain phases of the job, specifically, how information is developed, stored, retrieved, and then presented to someone else. One real advantage of computerization of safety data is that by this means the safety professional is using the same information storage and handling methods that are used by other parts of the business operation.
