ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a computerized safety data system and how it was organized. Our example system is designed to be used on a personal computer with at least 640 kilobytes of random access memory and at least 3 megabytes of memory (3,000,000 bytes). The computer can search through the records within a database and find the specific information requested because it is broken down into fields. The chapter also discusses menus in greater depth and gives more details of this technique as we go along. It then discusses how this particular software is organized and reviews the basic decisions which went into the design. To allow an inexperienced computer user to install the program is vital to the success of the program. It should provide written backup to the help screens and the online manual. For a program to be acceptable to a large organization, the software should operate on a wide variety of personal computer systems used in business.
