ABSTRACT
Chlorine dioxide was discovered in 1811 by Sir Humphry Davy by reacting potassium chlorate with sulfuric acid. Chlorine dioxide is a relatively unstable gas (bp 11°C) which cannot be compressed and liquefied without danger of explosion. Therefore, it must be generated at the site of use.
