ABSTRACT
In this chapter we will briefly discuss some of the properties of algebraic number fields, that is, extensions of the field of rational numbers. In Section 2 we discuss some of the general properties of algebraic number fields and then in Section 3 specialize to the case of quadratic number fields, about which most is known. In Section 4 we apply some of this information to the study of Diophantine equations.
