ABSTRACT

A captive molding shop, itself, is usually large, although there are exceptions. Whenever possible, molds are designed for unattended machine operations, and every attempt is made to make them idiot-proof. In a way, this parallels assembly-line conditions, where shift operation is the rule, and overseers for the machines are subject to transfer to other duties as they are needed. With regard to the mold design, it is essential that the mold designer work closely at the very beginning with the part designer. To repeat, injection molders must be completely familiar with all of these criteria, not only to apply the knowledge to their operation, but also to advise the end user early in the resin selection and mold design process. As time passes and the plastics processing industries become progressively more sophisticated, it is logical to look forward to a time when the operation of most injection molding machines will become completely automatic.
