ABSTRACT

In this chapter an attempt is made to develop a differential equation of the solute material balance, the solution of which will rigorously establish a concentration profile of the solute in the vicinity of the solution-membrane boundary. It is hoped that this approach will furnish a deeper understanding of the concentration polarization phenomenon. The concentration profile in a laminar flow channel between two reverse osmosis membranes has been established by numerical calculation and reported. Berman derived the following equations to describe the velocity profile in a channel between two flat porous plates placed in parallel. Suppose a solution flows through a channel between two flat membranes placed in parallel. Assume that the membrane width is much larger than the distance between the two membranes. The solution permeates both the upper and the lower membranes.
