ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a selection of the uses which have been found for particle detectors. Although many applications have been found for particle detectors outside high energy physics it would be foolish to ignore their application in the discipline which has forced their development and sees their most intensive application. The ZEUS detector is typical of the class of 4πdetectors which aim to detect as far as possible all the particles which come from a collision process, measure their angles, momenta and energies and identify the particles concerned, at least as far as distinguishing between photons, electrons, muons and hadrons. There are of course a wide variety of detectors used in gamma ray astronomy, but they are essentially the same as those used to detect gammas for other applications. Medical imaging is now one of the major areas of application for particle detectors.
