ABSTRACT

It is difficult to imagine any issue in the ’80s more visible than the protection of our environment. The authors share a common concern over the quality of life, and one of the most obvious mistakes of our society is the way we have traditionally approached the disposal of waste. The technical advances which are largely responsible for our consumer society should have also provided ways to properly manage the by-products of this industrial explosion. It should be one of our greatest regrets that industry did not seriously consider the issue of hazardous waste management until it was forced to do so by a suddenly awakened public. The dollar cost of proper disposal has surprised many small generators, largely because they do not believe they are generators and, in fact, are not obviously in that category. Certainly one of the prime considerations is the cost of transportation to the various disposal sites.
