ABSTRACT
The most obvious purpose in completing an internal environmental audit is to ensure that the facility is in compliance with regulations. An audit consists primarily of an inspection of the facility and a review of the inspection in light of regulatory requirements. Necessary corrections should be implemented immediately. Ideally, such an inspection will also increase safety awareness and expose employees to more information on the regulations than they might ordinarily receive. An environmental audit points out problem areas at the facility and is only useful if these problems are corrected. Careful consideration should be given to different ways to solve these problems. It may be necessary, for instance, to seek outside training sources if the expertise is not available in-house. The choice of hazardous waste management companies and facilities is one of the most important decisions facing a small quantity generator.
