ABSTRACT

Certain professional organizations such as the American Institute of Professional Geologists provide a summary of federal and state regulations affecting the geological community on a periodic basis. Ocean disposal of chemical and biological warfare agents and radiological and high-level radioactive wastes is also prohibited. The only permitted ocean dumping activity of any significance is the disposal of dredged spoil. The development of a groundwater detection monitoring system to detect the immediate potential release of contaminants from a specific waste management unit or facility is conducted in two phases. Phase I is the subsurface characterization and demonstration to Environmental Protection Agency that the site has been adequately characterized. Phase II is the design of the detection groundwater monitoring system and the demonstration that the system will serve for the immediate detection of a release.
