ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the factors affecting the mobilization, fixation, and transformation of liquid contaminants in locus 7. Liquid contaminants floating upon the water tables. The leaked liquid contaminant in this locus floats upon the water table and is generally less dense than water; in some circumstances, liquids which are denser than water may also float upon the water table. Liquid contaminant is present in locus 7 because of a leak which occurred in the subsurface or upon the land surface. The addition of hydrophilic compounds such as methanol, ethanol, and methyl-tertiary-butylether in quantities of as much as 10% by volume may result in gasoline solubilities of greater than 2000 mg/L. The thickness of liquid contaminant accumulating upon the water table depends on the rate at which the liquid contaminant leaks from the source, the intrinsic permeability of the porous medium, and the kinematic viscosity of the liquid contaminant.
