ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the reader will learn about: The importance of computer networks, The components of a local area network of computer, The Ethernet and Token ring communication networks, The difference between analog and digital transmissions, The use of a modem and its operating characteristics and The Open System Interconnection model and its implementation within Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) networks. More advanced communication software can also control teleconferencing, gateway services and videotext facilities. As well as being able to initialize various parameters, the software allows the uploading and downloading of files from and to the local host computer. For users, ISDN will provide end to end digital access for all communication applications over existing phone lines, without modems. Many software services should become available such as electronic mail, video conferencing etc. A key element of service integration for the ISDN is to provide a limited set of multipurpose user interface arrangements.
