ABSTRACT

Memory technology dominates the Korean electronics industry. Korean semiconductor manufacturers have a very small domestic market compared to their international one, and international markets tend not to be as forgiving as domestic ones. South Korean electronics industry leaders foresee a need for a faster, lower-power, and more heavily integrated DRAM in order to improve the performance of computers in the PC and workstation markets. In addition to pursuing development of flash memory, the Korean memory industry also appears interested in ferroelectric random access memory. Korean electronics manufacturers perceive that a major problem they face is that they lag their competitors in domestic development of basic manufacturing and materials technology. Good earnings and willingness to invest heavily in Research and development also provide strength to Korean companies. The most important strength of Korean semiconductor companies seems to be their employees. Company brochures and propaganda videos point out the importance of employees.
